If you didn’t say popcorn, we have a problem! I had the pleasure of visiting a beautiful space; the Alsip location of What’s Poppin. My new favorite flavor of popcorn is cheesy caramel; it satisfies both my sweet tooth and my savory craving at the same time.

Good energy and a warm welcome greeted me at the door. I was invited behind the counter to experience a sampling of their offerings. So many different flavors of popcorn; traditional as well as creative flavor combinations. Sweet and spicy pickles, gourmet nuts and creamy, fruit flavored Italian ice. I was also introduced to the special people that help keep the shop running. One in particular was described as an angel; CJ from Memphis. He presented best friends and now owners Kandace and Teneya with an opportunity of a lifetime, one too good to pass up. My tour included the storage section where signature tins and holiday print buckets are waiting to be filled. A little further into the back is where the magic happens; the popper was loaded, Farm Gold Cheese was stacked high and mushroom kernels were ready. I also got to taste a secret flavor of popcorn coming soon; the flavor was so authentic it took me back to my childhood.

What’s Poppin is a beautiful, clean, black owned shop with lots of love and lots of potential for growth. The owners have a goal to create economic development within the community by developing other stores that will create franchise opportunities. The owners are also in the exploratory stages of Hoagie shops. They employ high school students on Summer and Winter break as well as college students during their breaks. At this time the shop is in need of a popper and a cashier. The owners are Christian and are looking to hire like minded individuals.

I enjoyed my visit and appreciate the mini lessons; Farm Gold Cheese is an investment in good cheese flavor, no short cuts here. Then there are the mushroom kernels that pop into a ball and mimic the shape of a mushroom. These kernels are unique to the shop and are grown on a small farm.
